More Than a Day: Honouring Motherhood in All Its Forms
Mother’s Day isn’t simple. It can be beautiful — filled with celebration, gratitude, and love — and it can also bring up grief, longing, and complicated emotions. For many, it’s both.
Whether you’re a mother, missing a mother, yearning to become one, healing from loss, or redefining what motherhood means in your life — this day holds weight. And we want to make space for all of it.
A Day That Can Mean Many Things
Mother’s Day often shows up as brunch plans, handwritten cards, and floral arrangements. But behind those gestures are deeply personal stories. You may find yourself feeling:
Joy and pride in being a mom
Overwhelmed by the demands of caregiving
Grief for a parent or child who has passed
Frustration or sadness in strained family relationships
Ache and uncertainty while navigating fertility challenges or pregnancy loss
Disconnected from traditional ideas of what a “mother” should be
However you feel — it’s valid. Mother’s Day can be a reminder of love and also a spotlight on absence. It can reflect the beauty of caregiving, but also the cost of it. And many people feel a quiet tension this time of year that goes unspoken.
“There is no one way to mother, and there is no one way to feel on Mother’s Day. ”
Because care begins with being cared for, too.
Motherhood as Community Care
Mothers and caregivers are often the unseen infrastructure of our communities. They hold emotional labour, lead with love, organize, nourish, teach, and build. They show up for everyone else — even when their own needs go quiet.
At Latitude Counselling, we witness every day the depth of care our clients, patients, and practitioners bring into the world — often without applause or pause. This blog is a thank you. A love letter. And an invitation to let care come back to you, too.
Supporting Yourself Through the Day
If this time of year feels emotionally loaded, here are a few gentle ways to support yourself or others:
Name what you’re feeling. Write it down, speak it aloud, or just sit with it. Giving language to your experience can be grounding.
Set boundaries. You don’t have to show up in every space that doesn’t feel supportive — even family gatherings.
Create your own rituals. Whether it’s lighting a candle for someone you miss or treating yourself to something nourishing, rituals can bring comfort.
Reach out. You don’t need to process everything alone. Support is here.

Our Mother’s Day Giveaway: A Community Effort to Give Care Back
This year, we’re partnering with small local businesses — including jewellery stores, clothing stores and local boutiques — to offer something intentionally different. Alongside our Latitude practitioners, we’re offering:
Reduced-rate services (counselling, massage, acupuncture, and more)
Wellness add-ons to nourish both body and mind
Locally curated gifts for rest, beauty, and sweetness
Nominations for moms or caregivers who could use some extra love
This isn’t just a giveaway. It’s a way to honour the everyday caregivers — especially those who may not always have access to the time, space, or support they so freely give to others.
We believe care should be reciprocal. This is one small way we’re trying to give back.
