What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an extensively researched, effective psychotherapy method shown to help people recover from trauma and PTSD symptoms. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR engages bilateral stimulation (such as guided eye movements) to reprocess traumatic experiences in a way that allows the brain to heal naturally by helping individuals process distressing memories and reduce their emotional charge. Ongoing research supports positive clinical outcomes, showing EMDR therapy as a helpful treatment for disorders such as anxiety, depression, OCD, chronic pain, addictions, and other distressing life experiences (Maxfield, 2019).

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a non-drug, non-hypnosis psychotherapy procedure. The therapist guides the client in concentrating on a troubling memory or emotion while moving the eyes rapidly back and forth. This rapid eye movement, which occurs naturally during dreaming, seems to speed the client's movement through the healing process Research indicates that up to 90% of single-trauma PTSD sufferers no longer meet diagnostic criteria after just three 90-minute EMDR sessions (Van der Kolk, 2014). This makes it a powerful tool for those seeking lasting relief from psychological distress.

The EMDR Treatment Process

EMDR therapy is an eight-phase approach designed to ensure safe and effective trauma processing:

  1. History & Treatment Planning: Your therapist will assess your history and identify key distressing memories or present triggers for EMDR processing.

  2. Preparation: You’ll learn self-regulation techniques, such as mindfulness and grounding, to ensure emotional stability throughout the process.

  3. Assessment: Together, you’ll identify a specific memory, negative self-beliefs, associated emotions, and body sensations.

  4. Desensitization: Using bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones), the distressing memory is reprocessed until it no longer feels overwhelming.

  5. Installation: Positive beliefs replace the negative self-perceptions tied to past trauma.

  6. Body Scan: Any residual tension or distress linked to the memory is addressed to ensure complete processing.

  7. Closure: You’ll use self-soothing techniques to maintain balance between sessions and track progress.

  8. Reevaluation: In subsequent sessions, your therapist will assess the effectiveness of treatment and determine if further processing is needed.
